Kalitta Motorsports News

NORWALK, Ohio (July 7, 2013)— Sunday found the Kalitta Motorsports Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry Funny Car team packing up early after a first round loss at the 7th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

The No. 13 qualified Patrón team faced No. 4 qualifier Johnny Gray during round one of eliminations. After Gray’s team decided on a last minute lane swap, the black and green Toyota Camry pulled up to the line ready to make a run with their newly implemented engine combination- a tamed down version of Doug Kalitta’s Top Fuel dragster setup. With just five runs under their belt with the adjusted tune-up, the Tommy DeLago led Patrón team made a solid 4.131-second at 313.29-mph pass. Although it was a good run, it wasn’t enough against Gray’s 4.047-sec pass, ending Team Patrón’s day.

We qualified here in Norwalk, which is great. Last year we didn’t to race on Sunday, so I’m just happy to be in the show tomorrow.  We’re qualified thirteenth and face Johnny Gray first round.
Tommy DeLago, Crew Chief
Obviously like every week when we’re not number one qualifier, it wasn’t the weekend we wanted to have. We’re only on the fifth run on a new engine combo, and we’re still learning, but I see a lot more promise that what I saw before. We just have to learn what to do in various conditions. The conditions here are pretty much on both ends of the spectrum. During the night run on Friday, the track was incredible. We were on a pretty good pass on that run and were third fastest mph at half-track. Then today, the track deteriorated pretty quickly when it got hot out and it was really hard to adapt. In the fourth round we didn’t make the run we wanted but it was still the fifth quickest run of the session and it made it down the track. We were one of just a few cars to make it down the track in that round actually. If we can make it down tomorrow, we have a shot at winning.

Doug Kalitta – “It’s great to be No. 1 again. We’ve been able to do that a few times this year in the Mac Tools dragster. We struggled some in the heat today, but I have plenty of confidence in Jim (Oberhofer, crew chief) and Troy (Fasching, assistant crew chief) and our whole Mac Tools team. We’ll be ready to go out there and get some round wins tomorrow. Norwalk is my home track, and Mac Tools is based in Columbus, Ohio, so it would be really special to pick up our first event win of the season tomorrow here.”

The No. 1 in Norwalk is Kalitta’s fifth of the 2013 season and 36th of his 16-year Top Fuel career. He is now fifth all-time in career No. 1 qualifiers in Top Fuel. Kalitta is currently fifth in NHRA Mello Yello Top fuel championship points. He and the Mac Tools team have accumulated 43 qualifying bonus points thus far this season*. (*credit E. Doug Kalitta NorwalkNORWALK, Ohio, (July 4, 2013) – Doug Kalitta, driver of the 10,000-horsepower “Big Red” Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster for Kalitta Motorsports, thinks this may be the weekend that he and the Mac Tools team pick up their first “Wally” trophy of the 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at his “home track”, Norwalk Motorsports Park, during the annual running of the NHRA Norwalk Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

The Kalitta Motorsports race shop, based in Ypsilanti, Mich., is less that 120 miles away from Norwalk Motorsports Park making it the closest NHRA national event track for the team helmed by Kalitta’s Uncle Connie “the Bounty Hunter” Kalitta, team owner and drag racing icon.

“It’s always great racing in Norwalk because a lot of our family and friends are there to watch us race,” Kalitta, a 48-year old resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., said. “The track and the facility in Norwalk are among the best we see all year. Plus, they have one of the best fireworks shows you will ever see, so it’s great we can all celebrate Independence Day there.

David GrubnicNORWALK, Ohio, (July 3, 2013) – Native Australian David Grubnic, driver of the Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts Top Fuel dragster for Kalitta Motorsports, hopes that this weekend will see a change of fortune for him and his team as they celebrate America’s Independence Day and compete in the annual running of NHRA Norwalk Nationals at Norwalk Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

“We’ve been struggling with our Optima Batteries/Advance Auto Parts dragster,” Grubnic, a 50-year old resident of Bozeman, Mont., said. “We’ve been working on some new things, and sometimes you have to take a couple steps back to take three forward. We’re always looking to improve on our performance. Connie (Kalitta, team owner and crew chief) and the whole team have working feverishly to solve our performance deficit. We look forward to racing at Norwalk and at the same time celebrate this great nation’s birthday.”

Grubnic has raced to three quarterfinals thus far this season (Pomona, Calif., Phoenix, and Las Vegas), and he is currently No. 13 in NHRA Mello Yello Top Fuel championship points.

Del WorshamNORWALK, Ohio, (July 3, 2013) – Del Worsham, driver of the DHL Toyota Camry Funny Car for Kalitta Motorsports, is eager to get his 10,000-horsepower “fuel flopper” back on the track and celebrate America’s Independence Day at the annual running of NHRA Norwalk Nationals at Norwalk Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

“I'm very excited to race in Norwalk,” Worsham, a 43-year old resident of Chino Hills, Calif., said. “The Bader family (track owner) does an awesome job with the event. The fireworks show is the best I've seen, and I wouldn't want to spend the Fourth of July anywhere else.

“The DHL Toyota Camry has been at the top of the performance charts for most of the season, but the team has really stepped it up recently, and we know we have a hot rod that can go out and put up big numbers and compete for wins. That’s a great feeling to have as a driver.”
